On a powerful path of recalibration, transformation and necessary isolation leading up to the official start of Spring on March 19th, the vernal equinox is a time synonymous with balance in the Northern Hemisphere as well as cleaning up and clearing out. It represents (almost) equal day and (almost) equal night, symbolizing equal dark and equal light. It is the transitional time from the death of winter into fertile grounds of growth. Just as the Spring Equinox brings a balance to our external environments, our internal systems are naturally seeking a homeostasis as well. 

The current events with Corona Virus have most of us isolating and reaching to our pharmacopoeia to cope. Seeking to boost resilience of the complex web of biological systems, research is finding new ways that cannabis helps to bring equilibrium to organisms. For our bodies to function optimally there is a multidimensional balancing act happening at all times between immune cells, tissues and organs. As winter teaches us, death is not separate from growth but a necessary part of the process. Killing off cells is actually a crucial element of a healthy functioning immune system. It’s our body’s natural mechanism for “Spring Cleaning.” 

Cannabis can assist in keeping this delicate balance between growth and death within our bodies healthy. Cannabis has proven that it supports chemical balance and immunity. More research is also beginning to find the adaptive and dynamic nature of cannabinoids as bidirectional immunomodulators. What this means is that cannabis is a dynamic medicine in that it is immunosuppressive when there is hyper-immune response, which explains the relief experienced by medical cannabis users with autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammation, but otherwise it can regulate and correct the immune system to bring equilibrium. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and immune system are also intimately woven. When plant cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are introduced to our systems our health is influenced in different ways as it interacts with the ECS and then communicates to the immune system.

Aside from the immune system, cannabis can be a huge help in relieving anxiety during stressful times bringing calm and peace of mind. Balancing Breath Ritual: 

Lung health and immune health is our best bet for resiliency right now. This short breathing exercise is super easy and suggested to do each morning and each evening for 3-5 minutes with eyes closed to encourage lung health and healthy immune responses during this generative time. 

 

BOX BREATHE INSTRUCTIONS: 

  • Find a comfortable and quiet seat in a chair or cross-legged on the ground
  • Feeling grounded with feet on the floor if in a chair and letting the knees drop below the hips if seated cross-legged on the ground. 
  • Spine straight; tail bone rooting into your seat. Chin parallel to the floor; Give our lungs room to expand and contract.
  • Inhale 4 seconds; hold in 4 seconds; exhale 4 seconds; hold out 4 seconds. Continue…
